  • Harold Mann, drums

Legendary saxophonist David Fathead Newman is best known for his work with Ray Charles and Buster Smith (Charlie Parker’s mentor) during the 1950s and 1960s and early 1970s. In fact, Ray Charles helped Newman’s career greatly by producing his first solo album in 1960, on which was the tune Hard Times, a hit that is now considered Newman’s signature piece. Since the late 90's he has been with Highnote Records and last year was featured on a John Scofield Ray Charles tribute album. Possessing a soulful, rich sound that always swings and hints at the blues, Fathead Newman is a master of all saxophones and the flute. This concert promises to be a season opener that will have you dancing in your seats. Come early for a gallery talk that explores the musicality of the works of African-American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner and the subsequent generations of artists he impacted in the exhibition Henry Ossawa Tanner and His Influence in America.

What better place to experience the area premiere of Walt Weiskopf’s ten-part jazz suite entitled Sight to Sound than in The Baltimore Museum of Art! Inspired by visual art itself and by seven famous European artists (Miro, Picasso, Pissarro, Monet, Dali, Toulouse-Lautrec, and van Gogh), the suite has been hailed as an “incisive, modern opus that’s accessible while still being forward-looking.” A gifted saxophonist who is comfortable in several genres (he is a member of Steely Dan as well as classically trained), Weiskopf has amassed an impressive group who will let loose with some straight-ahead jazz following the impressive Sight to Sound. Before the concert, come and enjoy a docent-led tour that explores the relationship between art and music as Weiskopf has, celebrating modern masters from Picasso to Van Gogh.

Annual Jazz Masters Concert

  • Jimmy Cobb, drums

  • Peter Bernstein, guitar

  • Richard Wyands, piano

  • John Webber, bass

For the Annual Jazz Masters Concert, CJS has chosen the great drummer Jimmy Cobb. Mostly self-taught, Jimmy Cobb is the last surviving member from the 1959 classic album Kind of Blue, long considered the best-selling jazz album of all time. Linked to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and the masters of jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, Jimmy Cobb is certainly no relic. With his working band, Cobb’s Mob, which includes the popular guitarist Peter Bernstein, Cobb continues to explore and develop his sound. Without a doubt, this will be a swinging concert! In celebration of Black History Month, arrive early to explore the visual art by African-American “masters” on a docent-led tour of the BMA’s collection.
